The music sounds impressive, explosions fill the room, and the character’s next instruction disappears underneath both. Raising the master volume makes everything louder together. It may leave the original problem exactly where it was.
Before changing hardware, inspect the game’s audio menu. Separate dialogue, effects and music controls, when available, let you change the balance rather than the overall level.
Use a scene you can compare
Choose a short repeatable conversation or a safe section with both speech and background sound. Note the starting settings. Change one control, replay the same material and decide whether the words are easier to follow.
If dialogue is already at its maximum, reducing music or effects may be more useful than increasing the master level. Keep playback comfortable; loudness is not a substitute for clarity. Subtitles can provide another route to the information where the game supports them.
Match the output mode to the equipment
Check whether the game offers headphone, stereo, surround or dynamic-range presets, and consult its own descriptions. Labels are not identical across titles. A preset intended for equipment you do not have may not behave as you expect.
Also inspect the platform or device output selection. If speech is unexpectedly absent or a channel seems missing, confirm which device is receiving the sound before adjusting every in-game slider. Record changes so you can return to the original setup.
For a fictional comparison, try the same dialogue scene with music at its original level and then moderately reduced. If speech becomes clearer without changing the master volume, you have identified a mix issue in that situation. That does not prove every other scene or another game will need the same settings.
Keep voice chat separate
A teammate’s microphone, platform chat mixer and in-game dialogue can have independent controls. Identify which voice you cannot hear before altering the wrong one. Ask the teammate to check their input if only their speech is affected.
Save a short note of the successful setup and revisit it when changing speakers or headphones. The best result is an understandable conversation at a comfortable level, with enough of the game’s atmosphere left to enjoy.
